Karen Teaching Native American Spirit Animals: Indigenous student speaks...

A TikTok video has surfaced of a non-native professor teaching inaccurate information about indigenous cultures and being called out for it by a native student. If you want to stay up to date on this developing story, please hit that subscribe button below.

The course is called “Native Peoples of The Americas” at Westchester Community College. The assignment was called the “Spirit Animal Quiz”. The teacher is Rosemary Diaz and many think she should not be allowed to teach any courses about Indigenous and First Nations people.

What I find most disturbing is the teacher using her position of power to imply Native Americans are dumb and too outspoken, in a professional setting no less.

Karen Teaching Native American Spirit Animals: Indigenous student speaks outThe teacher became immediately defensive. The perfect response would have involved thanking her and accepting the info to recalibrate her lessons for the future. The best would have been to invite the student to continue to give her feedback. Which means, Diaz says she’s been teaching for “20 years”, which means she’s been teaching Native American cultures wrong for that long!

The teacher was trying to talk about Natives like they’re a monolith. Being an Indigenous student and constantly having to explain and correct other students let alone professors must be incredibly exhausting and can be super intimidating, so a big shoutout to them for speaking up.

What do you think about a Native American student correct their teacher about spirit animals and then being immediately shut down because she says indigenous people are “talk” too much? Sound off in the comments below and don’t forget to subscribe.
