Selena Gomez - De Una Vez (Official Video): Symbolism explained
In this music video, Selena Gomez is empowering anyone who’s rediscovering who they are after a breakup.
The beginning of the music video we can see that her heart has a scratch. It’s broken because of her past life. After this her heart heals because the pain is gone and it doesn’t hurt anymore. Which means she got stronger. With all the lamps fading to black and her heart lighting it up, it tells us she’s found the strength inside her to light the way. The heart could also possibly be a nod to a person who “wears their heart on their sleeve.”
In the two-minute video, Gomez walks through a small home filled with a past. Toward the end of the video, the home’s material possessions are pulled away through the ceiling, leaving an empty casing. See that wallpaper breaking in the back. In the past she didn’t feel free because (I believe) she was stuck in her past and couldn’t get through it.

In this part, I think she’s burning her past as if she wanted to forget about it, letting go of memories. Pictures can remind you of the dark times so she burns them to forget.
Selena is dancing in an empty room because she’s enjoying life again without needing anyone by her side. She can live and be happy on her own now. She doesn’t need anyone because she’s all that matters.
Mirrors again! She’s sitting in the bath clearly upset but in the mirror it’s her “revival”.
Okay so now you see how everything is levitating and the ceiling breaks. Imagine that there’s a storm going on here metaphorically speaking and everything flies away cuz of the wind. But she doesn’t levitate cuz she’s bulletproof and strong.
I think the song is about feeling confident, happy and strong on your own. What do you think it’s about? Sound off in the comments below and don’t forget to subscribe.
