The woman was tapping into centuries of racist rhetoric: calling women Of colour masculine was a means to standardize them as brutish & undesirable. As the Jim Crow Museum puts it, “Because Mammy was masculine in her looks and temperament, she was not seen as a sexual being or threat to white women.”
